A Chance at States

Hackett has three students involved in the Kalamazoo Area High School figure skating team. Freshmen Precious Ongwela, senior Lindsey Piel, and senior Amanda Piel are all on the team this year. This is Coach Mia Jawor’s first time heading the high school team and she has already brought a fresh feel to the program.

Despite being two skaters down, the high school team did well at the last competition in Holland, hosted by Midland Area. A Team, B Team, and C Team all did well in their respective categories, racking up a decent amount of points which will help them qualify for states. Coach Mia has really been on top of things, and is currently calculating what placements are needed to solidify a spot for Kalamazoo Area at states.

The next competition takes place four hours away in Alpena. Skaters are preparing the elements they need to perform and hoping to take first or second place in order to place top two in the Southwest division in Michigan. As they approach this qualifier in February, they are hoping they have the skills and the grit to make it to states.
