A Hackett Rockstar in the Making
“I knew him in high school!” is what Hackett students will be saying soon. Julian Barry, Hackett senior, is the bassist of the talented up and coming Kalamazoo band, Zero Sun. He has been a part of the band for about a year and a half and they’ve been rocking ever since.

Since joining the band, Julian has had to learn how to juggle the time consuming commitments he has made in and outside of school. When asked how he manages it all he says, “It’s definitely hard scheduling my time sometimes but I've learned how to deal with it over the years”. With the time he has outside of school, he explained that the band meets about 1-2 times a week, and more when they have an upcoming project like a show or recording music.
Inspired by Robert Deleo, Simon Gallup from the band the Cure, and John Mayer’s bass player Pino Palladino, Julian expressed that he tries to portray each of these stars as he performs. As for the rest of the band, they are greatly influenced by Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Over the course of the band’s career, they have performed all over Kalamazoo, even performing in Ann Arbor this past month. Over the summer, Zero Sun played at One Well Brewing along with a list of other well renowned bands. Below are fellow Hackett students watching Julian showcase his skills.

However, their time in the spotlight doesn't stop there. As of now they have two upcoming shows. One is on March 14th at the Dormhouse theatre here in Kalamazoo. Their next show is at the Kalamazoo Fretboard Festival on March 21 and 22. Julian explained that this venue is a big deal for Zero Sun. Not just anyone plays at this event, it is known as a very selective event so they are very excited to have this opportunity.

As Zero Sun increases in popularity and performs at impressive venues, go out and show your support for our Hackett senior. Julian says everyone should come out and support because “we are making something pretty unique in my opinion and we put tons of hard effort and motion into it, and it’s a pretty cool thing to see in person”. Go show your support and listen to their newly released music on Spotify!
