An Unexpected Upset: Varsity Girls' 10-2 record
By Leah Smith
The varsity girls’ winterfest game will definitely be one to remember! The Lady Irish went up against our rivals, Kalamazoo Christian, and were successful in breaking the four year, nine game losing streak that had been in place.
The girls were down 39 to 33 at halftime, and in the third and fourth quarters, they made their way back, tying it up 55-55 with seven seconds to go.

When senior Addie Smucker was asked about how she felt during the game she replied: “I was so excited when the score started getting closer, we haven’t come close to beating K Christian in the 4 years I’ve been here. It was exciting to think we could actually win!” With a long inbounds throw, Addie caught the ball and was fouled and sent to the line. She made her first free throw, and junior Bethany Carpenter stole the ball back after the second was missed, winning the game for the Irish.
“When Addie made her first free throw and we were up by one and the adrenaline kicked in and somehow I got a steal and then I realized the game was over and we won!” said junior Bethany Carpenter when asked about her last second steal.
This game was definitely one to remember, and helped the team with their impressive 9-2 record, one of the best in the SAC Conference. Their only two previous losses were Kalamazoo Christian earlier in the year, and Schoolcraft, who we play again this Friday at home.
At the last Schoolcraft/Hackett matchup, the girls were short of Addie, their starting point guard, and the end score was 29-32. This time they have her back, and are ready for another win. Show up this Friday and be loud to help the varsity girls to another big win!
