Gearing Up for a Successful Winter Sports Season
By: Leah Smith
As all of our fall sports seasons conclude, several winter teams have been practicing and scrimmaging nonstop. Both girls and boys basketball have had scrimmages, the boys last week at home versus Kalamazoo Cougars, and girls at Saugatuck last Saturday the 23rd, and again this Saturday in Battle Creek.
The boys basketball teams begin regular-season games this week, the first game being Saturday the 30th at home versus Watervliet. The girls begin next week December 3rd, away at Coloma. Â
Hackett also has several Co-Op winter sports for students to participate in, such as Hockey, Boys Swim and Dive, and Ski Team. We have two Hackett athletes, sophomore Vincent Walbridge, and junior James Scothorn on the The Kalamazoo United Hockey team. The team is made up of players from Hackett, Loy Norrix, Kalamazoo Central, and Three Rivers.Â
The boys had their season opener last Wednesday the 20th at Wings West, and have another game coming up this Wednesday, the 27th against the Kalamazoo Eagles, a team including players from Paw-Paw, Gull Lake, Plainwell, Parchment, Kalamazoo Christian, and Comstock.
Hackett’s Co-Op Ski Team, conjoined with Vicksburg, has 12 Hackett members freshmen Dakota Devito, Monroe Miles and Johnny Higginbottom, sophomores Brie Siems, Colin Gallagher and Kellen Siems, juniors Katelyn Gillen, Paige Ziegler, Cohen Happel, Edward Miles, and Sean Siems, and the team’s only returning senior, Abby Ulbrich.Â
Our school also merges with Mattawan to create Hackawan Swim and Dive, in which we have one returning member, junior Max Gerl, and tentative members, juniors Danillo Soares, and Sean Siems.Â
Come out and show your support for our hard-working student athletes! We anticipate some wonderful competition and one never knows what excitement awaits with these gifted Irish athletes!
