Twice as Nice: Twin Golfers on the Rise

Two seniors at Hackett, Andrew and Chris Ogrin, are both outstanding golf players. Andrew is number 2 and Chris is number 1 on a loaded varsity team.

When I asked Andrew about Chris and his golf game he stated, “We can talk about how good we are, but when we get up to the first hole of matches, we have to shut up and play.”

But truthfully how they got to where they are now started at humble beginnings at the age of 8 when they both got their first set of clubs. When asked what their relationship to the game was early on, Andrew said,

“I was pretty buns but thought I was good and that kept me going. I saw the potential I had.”

Chris added,

“We were similar and both extremely competitive, which helped us push each other.”

As a surprise to no one, they are a set of twins. Last year in the golf playoffs they both shot the same score and tied for 11th in states, a crazy coincidence. Some say they have twin telepathy, especially the people at school who see them daily, but the Ogrin twins swear they do not.

While many twins report a strong connection, twin telepathy, or the ability to communicate telepathically or sense events in each other's lives, lacks scientific evidence and is largely considered a myth. Shared experiences and understanding, rather than psychic abilities, are more likely the cause of these perceived connections, and the Ogrin twins think that this is why this crazy coincidence happened.

Even though they shot the same score, they do both claim that one is better than the other. Chris says, “We all know who the best is,” and Andrew says, “Really it’s just whoever shows up on any given day”

Chris and Andrew both shooting a 164 each last year in playoffs helped an already stacked team of Grahm Zygadlo, Justin Tyler, and Noah Emmer, to finish 5th in the state last year. Reportedly this year they are looking even stronger with all their players returning and even some rising stars like Leland Berg and Cohen Happel who the team calls “foot wedge.”  They are projected to have an astonishing top 3 in the state.

Senior Grahm Zygadlo says,  “When everyone is playing their best we have the best top 5 tandem in D4, this year is gonna be about putting it all together and getting the job done.”

There are many great things to expect and to look for in Hackett’s golf game this year. They put in much hard work in the off-season and are expected to take the Irish deep into the playoffs this year.

If you see a golfer in the hall, wish them well and be prepared for a historic season this year!
