Uniform or Divided?

Hackett sets itself apart from other high schools in many ways. One of the most visible ways is the uniforms that the students wear. But what are the benefits?

A study done by the University of Nevada in 2013 showed that, on average, schools that implemented uniforms experienced decreases in bullying and increases in safety, and students’ self esteem, confidence, and ease of going to school. This study heavily favors uniforms, and outlines the benefits that uniforms have on students.

When asked about his opinion on school uniforms, senior Preston Cosby answered, “Everyone knows what to wear and no one judges anyone. It also puts us in a working mindset.”

This brings up another good point. Students at Hackett are all made equal by the use of  uniforms. There is no place to judge what someone else is wearing because everyone is wearing the same thing. While there are variations to the school uniform, everyone is equal, and nobody feels singled out by what they do or do not have to wear. Uniforms also allow a person to be in a school mindset. When someone is in a school mindset, they can perform better academically.

However, not all students feel this way. Some students feel that uniforms are overly restrictive and do not allow students to express themselves. Senior Tyler Brand said, “I feel that wearing uniforms is boring because it hides our personalities. If we were allowed to wear whatever we wanted, we could see each other’s personalities more.”

While this may have some truth to it, the benefits of uniforms greatly outweigh the disadvantages. Wearing uniforms is greatly beneficial to students. Students do not have to stress about what to wear. They can also find comfort in knowing that they are equal to their classmates; everyone is in the same boat. Uniforms have been proven to be beneficial to students, and a large number of students who wear uniforms agree.
