Updated Phone Policy
This semester, the phone policy at Hackett has been updated to ensure that students do not have their phones on them while in school. Last semester, many students kept their phones in their backpacks, causing them to be tempted to take them out during class. Now, the policy is that if a student does not have their phone in the locked box, they must have an email from their parent or guardian confirming that their phone is not in their possession during the school day. Enforcing this will prevent students from having their phones in their pockets or their backpacks.

With this updated policy there are many discussions between students, parents, and teachers. A parent stated, “It’s really nice to know that my child and his classmates are actually paying attention and being present during class. Putting phones away really takes away that temptation to look at their phones during class.”
Many students agree that this rule will crack down on people having phones in their backpacks and pockets. That being said, some students think that this rule is unnecessary. Tyler Brand said, “I think it’s really excessive.”
While some students disagree with the updated policy, many have said that they feel better knowing that they are not the only ones who are actually putting their phones in boxes. There is a stronger sense of equality since students are being held accountable for putting phones in boxes or being honest about leaving them in cars or at their house.
Teachers also appreciate this updated policy, as they no longer have to police students and repeatedly ask if there are more phones to put in boxes, or try to find out who is not putting their phone away. This takes away stress and makes phones more of a responsibility for the students who own them.
Overall, there are many mixed feelings about this new policy, but most people would agree that, although this updated policy isn’t liked by everyone, it will certainly be effective in keeping phones out of the classroom.
