You've Got a Friend in Me

Is a man’s best friend always a dog? When we hear the word “pets,” we immediately think of the more common domesticated animals like cats or dogs. It might surprise you, but cats and dogs aren’t the only animals that make good pets. After reading articles and learning more about the people at Hackett, we have concluded that pet ownership extends far beyond cats and dogs.

Here are the top 5 from Hackett:

Number 5: Husovsky’s High Flyers

Siblings Thea, Lukas, and Lucia have their own unique pets consisting of four individual pet ducks. “Lukas found these ducks in two random bushes by the pond at our house. We knew that you are supposed to buy ducks in pairs so we bought two more from Tractor Supply. Now they just follow Lukas wherever he goes.” Two of their ducks are named Jet and Popcorn and the others are still nameless. If you are looking for a pet to follow you around like a mother, a duck might be the right one for you!

Number 4: “My 600 lb Cat”

For Number 4 on this list we are taking a look at a common pet, a cat, but something tells us that there isn’t anything common about it. Leah and Tori Smith’s cat, Buddy, is abnormally round. The American Shorthair cat weighs in at a whopping 25.6lbs. The average weight of a cat is only around 8.8-11lbs. “Our cat is like a genius. He opens our sliding door and he can open cabinets. He would get into more trouble but he’s just too big.” It might be wise for Leah and Tori to buy a cat treadmill.

Number 3: Higdon’s Horse

Have you ever wondered what pets Earl Higdon might own? Well, after asking about his pet ownership he was more than thrilled to inform us about Kat, his personal Quarter Horse. “We take him for rides in the summer and he is kept in our barn on the 190 acres we live on.” Earl’s free-range grounds provide a paradise for his horse to gallop and graze.

Number 2: Trapper’s Perky

One of the people’s favorite pets on this list, and one and only reptile, belongs to Harrison Wheeler. Harrison owns a lizard most famously known by his name, Perky. “One day I was out with my friends and we saw a pet store. I asked my dad if I could get a lizard, and he said no. Later that day I came home with my lizard, Perky.” Harrison showed his loyalty to Perky and would never let anything happen to him.

Number 1: Parker Rocks

The number 1 ranked pet in the 2025 Hackett Catholic Prep student body goes to none other than junior Parker Hosner. Parker owns a Michigan original pet rock. His rock, Joey, is plain and simple, with no painting or markings, just a simple rock he acquired from a friend's house six years ago. “Joey is original, he is from my friend's house. I did not decide to paint him because I would never give him a tattoo he didn’t ask for.” Clearly, Parker is an amazing pet owner and loves his pet to death.

Hackett’s community has welcomed a wide range of pets. If you think you have an unusual pet that should have been mentioned on this list, please send in your submissions!
