Here Come The Irish!
Friends off the court, enemies on the court. Quickly heating up in this cold winter is Hackett’s basketball program! The boys are already 1-0 this season after beating Watervliet 73-51 last Saturday, November 30th, but it is this first week of December that marks both the mens and womens first full week of basketball games and it would be an understatement to say that they are starting with an exhilarating game.
On Friday, December 6th, our varsity mens and womens basketball team will travel across town to take on our rivals, Kalamazoo Christian. Last year the boys varsity team went 2-1 against the Comets, beating them in the playoffs 45-35, sending our Irish to the District Finals. Junior shooting guard Leland Berg said, “The games against K Christian are one of the most fun games to play in all year. It feels like everybody in town attends those games and when you are playing your rivals it is always a good competitive game.”
The girls are first to play on Friday, with tip-off starting at 6 pm. Last year the girls varsity finished 0-2 against the Comets which left them hungry for revenge. Our girls have some promising new faces this year and have been dedicating loads of time in the offseason preparing for their rematch. When asked about their matchup with K Christian, Junior Leah Smith said, “Our team has been putting in a lot of work and we’ve got a good game plan which we think will give us our best shot. I’m excited to play and ready to upset K Christian!”
It is safe to say that these games mean something special to each player and there is no doubt that these matchups won’t disappoint.
Sometimes the deciding factor of these intense games lies in the participation of the fans. It is a must that the Irish community shows up and supports our Irish and aids them to victory. Please, students who do show up, participate in the student section!
On Friday, Kalamazoo Christian will also be incorporating a diaper fundraiser to support young families during this relentless winter season. Spectators can bring any size pack of diapers and will get one free ticket for every pack they bring in. This is a great way to support our community so participate if you can!
