SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Liliana Kandow: Built by Family

Liliana Kandow has always viewed family as being the heart of everything. She was born and raised in Kalamazoo MI, and has built her life around many relationships especially with her mom, who she called her “best friend.” Whether they’re watching Gilmore Girls or having conversations which deepen as Lili grows older, their bond is centered around love and understanding. Lili also has two older sisters, Katie and Ella, who are just as important in her life. Golfing with Ella and her mom has become one of Lili’s favorite ways to connect.

Family means more to Lili than the people she just related to, it extends to those who she has chosen. For the past year and a half, Lili has worked as a nanny to a family who has become part of her heart. What started as a fun side job caring for twins and a toddler has now developed into something deeper. Now, she spends 3-4 days a week watching four children including a newborn. During the summer, her days are long, often nannying from 10 a.m. to 9 p. Her days are filled with outdoor adventures, playtime, and her favorite- milestones. From witnessing baptisms to dance recitals and road trips, Lili does not just watch the kids but she has become a part of their lives. 

“I have always loved kids,” Lili said, “It makes me happy to see them grow and hit new milestones. I really feel like I am part of their little family.”

The job has not always been easy as she had to learn how to manage bottles, naptime, and endless amounts of energy taking patience, but for Lili she views it as a calling. She has found a specific joy in helping kids learn and grow. She has credited her experience with helping her decide her future path.

After graduation, Lili plans to attend Grand Valley State University to study sonography and work at getting her certification as a postpartum doula, where she can continue to help aid families. She hopes to continue nannying throughout college and even stated “I told the family I am more than happy to make the drive, if I am ever needed.” 

From her deep family ties to the children she has helped raise, Liliana brings care and warmth to everything she does. As she heads into the next chapter of her life, her love for others will with no doubt keep guiding her path.
